Doing Everything Right But Still Not Feeling Close to God?

What do you do when you feel like you’re doing the right things and God’s not answering?

We’ve all got situations where we need God to move in our lives. More than anything else, we want to feel his touch and know that he’s here with us. But the thing is, it’s easy to lose that feeling of connection with him. We might feel like something is off without really knowing what the problem is.

Maybe you’ve prayed. You’ve searched Scripture for God’s answer in a certain area of your life. You’ve applied biblical principles. You’ve sought wise counsel. But something still feels missing.

Here’s the problem: I think you can be following the biblical principles that God’s giving you and still not be satisfied in your prayer life. Because biblical principles and emotional connection aren’t the same thing.

When I Trusted Biblical Principles More Than God Himself

I know this because I spent years assuming my relationship with God was going well as long as I was getting the right guidance from him. As a child, I was taught to hear his voice in my prayer journal. But even while I was having two-way conversations with God, I got into a rut of trusting biblical principles more than I trusted God himself.

And that was actually twisted. God didn’t want me trusting the insights he gave me more than the bigger God behind the insights. The relationship was right there in my prayer journal. It just wasn’t the main thing organizing how I lived life.

The thing I fell back on, the thing that made me secure, was my belief system more than my prayer journal. Can you guess how I viewed people with weak belief systems? Yep, I felt like they were below me. I was self-righteous.

The love and enjoyment we’re meant to experience with God doesn’t actually change depending on the guidance he gives us. It’s built in as a natural expression of who we are at the core. When we’re not accessing that deeper comfort zone with him, our belief system can become the idol we fall back on. Relationships take the back burner and everyone suffers.

Growing up, my parents were 100% committed to church community, healthy living, and financial discipline. Their way of life trained me to delay gratification and just do what was best for everyone around me. But looking back, I can see how this approach built my identity around being right about God instead of being cherished by God.

Eventually, relying on that pride caused a severe disconnect from my emotions that led to clinical depression. I’d learned how to meet expectations without paying much attention to how God and I felt about each other.

What If the Missing Piece Isn’t Clarity?

I wonder if that’s why many Christians are secretly frustrated in their prayer life. They keep looking for more biblical clarity to relieve the uncertainty, reduce the tension and stress, and resolve the loneliness.

But the real missing piece in the equation isn’t clarity at all. It’s the fact that they’re not really making it a priority to soak up God’s protection, provision, and affection. Searching the Bible for the love we already know is there doesn’t actually bring us into the conversation to experience it.

When we feel a block in our prayer life, we often assume the problem is that we’re not aligning with God’s will. So we search harder for the right biblical principle, the right answer, or the right next step.

This may be partly because our culture tends to be oriented around achievement. But we know that God is oriented around love.

So these two get twisted together. We end up thinking that being guided by biblical truth means we have intimacy with God. But if you’ve ever gotten an answer from God and then later still felt like it was up to you to implement it, you know there’s something wrong with this picture.

You don’t just need clarity from God for how to live your life. You need to feel like someone has your back, is in this with you, and is implementing the answers right beside you.

Because the truth is, he’s excited to reveal his plans to you. He enjoys being with you and taking you personally through life one step at a time.

Biblical Principles Aren’t the Same Thing as Intimacy

When a committed Christian says, “I feel like I’m doing the right things and he’s not answering,” she wants an open channel of communication.

But she’s got it backwards. Prayer doesn’t align her with God’s will so that he can answer her. Prayer is an experience of love, and the loving dialogue provides the answers that reveal his will for her.

Without this dialogue, she’s stuck always trying to be in the flow of his will. But she’s bypassing the love relationship. She’s trying to trade her cooperation for his blessing and approval, her obedient alignment for his responsiveness, and the security of being in his will for the security of knowing he holds her.

But his side is really what comes first, not her side.

She may not be thinking, “I don’t feel intimate with God.” But her churchy concept of intimacy may not even be truly interactive.

People know what it means to interact with a person. You notice. You respond. They respond. You share. They share. There’s a dialogue between two people.

Intimacy grows out of repeated interaction.

Many Christians assume that:

Biblical principles → intimacy

But I think the real progression is:

Biblical principles → interaction → intimacy

And that’s where the frustration comes in.

Knowing What Your Father Says Isn’t the Same as Experiencing Him

We may feel intimate while singing about intimacy at church, but that can feel vague and unattainable when it comes to everyday life. Have you gotten the impression that experiencing God isn’t as important as knowing and standing on his truth? What if both are equally important?

Would you feel like your dad had your back if you only treated him like a guidance counselor all the time? In Psalm 91, the Bible describes a secret place of the Most High where we can experience the Father’s personal attention, provision, and protection.

A person can faithfully apply everything they know from Scripture while doing their daily devotions and still lack the feeling of being loved and adored by their Father. It’s not that they’re doing the wrong thing. The problem could be that they’re expecting right answers to bring that feeling of closeness with God.

Because knowing what your Father says about life isn’t the same thing as experiencing him in your life.

If prayer feels frustrating because you’re doing everything you know to do and still not getting the clarity you want, it may not be that God isn’t answering. It may be because deep inside, you actually want more than just the solution for your situation.

You don’t just need to know what to do next. You actually want to relax and trust God all the time, knowing what he really thinks and feels about what you’re facing.

What melts the anxiety is knowing that he’s been arranging the little details of your life just to show you his love. Because the safety of his sovereignty releases us from depending on an outcome to bring back a sense of security.

But he’s designed us to need experiences of him, not just knowing about him, to enjoy our lives to the fullest.

How I Have a Two-Way Conversation With God

Here are the basic instructions for how I have a two-way conversation with God.

Make time for a heart-to-heart conversation with your Father with no noise or people in the background. Have blank paper or a blank screen ready to take notes on whatever happens. Get a Bible or Bible app.

Welcome your Father and Creator and imagine that he sits down next to you, so happy that you’re his child. Notice and write down any thoughts or feelings that come to mind, even if they don’t seem important.

Ask God to speak to you about whatever he wants you to know, and write down everything that comes into your mind. You can sort out later what’s from God, from your own brain, and from the devil. For now, just capture the flow.

When that comes to a pause, write or tell God anything you like about whatever’s on your mind. Continue imagining the Father beside you, and write whatever you feel God is saying to you and what you would say back if he were physically present.

When you’re ready, read something in the Bible that pops out to you. Open up to the letters to the Gentiles, Romans through Philemon, if you’re not sure where to start. Continue to write down the things that you and God would say to each other if he were sitting beside you.

Once you reach a stopping point, look back at what you’ve written and ask the Holy Spirit if any of it is from him. Cross out what doesn’t match the biblical truth about God. Underline anything that resonates with how you’ve experienced him before.

If you need help knowing which is which, feel free to take your notes to a Christian friend who’s had experience with prayer.

In the end, God is in charge of communicating his love to you, however he wants to do it. You’ll probably experience a mixture of true and false thinking as you get to know him better and better. For now, why not enjoy whatever builds your relationship and set aside anything that doesn’t?

How I Know a Conversation Has Built Our Relationship

The first way I know is that it reveals God’s personal involvement in my thoughts. God often draws my attention to fears I hadn’t recognized, assumptions I didn’t realize I was making, desires I didn’t know how to put into words, things I’ve overlooked, and connections I never would’ve seen on my own.

The second way is that after I’ve tried different ways of applying his insight to my life, I see situations fitting together in a way that shows his involvement.

The third way is my journal. It’s where I can look back at yesterday and last week and see how he brought my circumstances together to answer me. And that’s how I know my intimacy with God is getting stronger.

This is what reveals the Person behind the guidance. The reason his answer matters is that it reveals his deep affection. It reveals how well he knows you, and it shows you that he’s paying attention and causing your circumstances to work out for your good, as Romans 8:28 says.

Wherever things are still going wrong, because they always do, you can expect to have even deeper dialogues about what he’s doing in your life. Expect some answers to come right away and others to take forever.

This is all part of a lifelong treasure hunt for his purpose and his power. So treasure the intimacy that develops as you get to know him, because that’s way more satisfying than just getting answers. There will always be problems, and he’ll always have new solutions.

When Prayer Starts to Feel Like a Weight

Have you ever had a season in your life when you wanted to spend all the time you could in God’s presence? This kind of prayer journaling brings that sweetness of discovering how personally and intimately God has been thinking about you.

Your decisions won’t feel heavier than they were designed to be, because you can feel God taking responsibility for leading your life.

If prayer has started to feel like a weight instead of a relief, ask yourself this: Is there something making me want to settle for a mediocre prayer life?

We usually settle at the level of those around us. Often our Christian climate isn’t built to foster a sweet prayer life.

If you hear a lot of teaching about how to know about God’s will for you, your prayer journal might become focused around gaining clarity. If you hear a lot about better ways to recognize God’s answers, your prayer journal could end up feeling like a tool to improve discernment.

So I recommend that before you do anything else to improve your prayer life, get the right foundation in place by starting a written, two-way conversation.

All the teaching you hear from Christian pulpits and social media is meant to be discussed and applied within that relationship. Your journal time simplifies it all down into what God is saying to you.

Keeping track of what you hear only happens when you allow yourself time in your schedule to see him putting ideas and Scriptures together like a puzzle. When you’re that focused, you can set aside anything that doesn’t make sense until you see where it fits into what he’s already doing.

It’s okay to be devoted to the one thing that matters most: your connection with your vine. That’s the only fruitful life.

You Don’t Have to Get This Right

The good news is, you don’t have to get this right today or ever. Your righteousness isn’t the point.

You’re learning to notice interaction. Little things you’ve never noticed now feel special. Remember, intimacy grows out of repeated interaction over time. This is what makes the beauty of daily life so satisfying: him showing up to partner with you.

The Bare-Bones Takeaway

Committed Christians live with stress and frustration because they’re doing everything they know to do and still feel distant from God. They’ve prayed. They’ve searched Scripture. They’ve applied biblical principles. They’ve sought wise counsel. And still, something feels missing.

This missing piece might not be more wisdom.

What we need more than anything is real-time, intentional interaction with our Father through the Holy Spirit of Jesus. You can have a two-way conversation with him by writing and then evaluating the thoughts that come into your mind.

Let’s Pray This

Lord, give me some special time this week to come to you, just as I am, so I can have fun pondering how you’re showing up for me. I want to be fully satisfied partnering with your Holy Spirit.

Use my prayer journal to make me full of fruit. Bring out the love, joy, and peace that you have planned for me today so I can enjoy your presence all day long. Amen.
